Given the wide range of devices, it became essential to establish core principles and understanding for Android's core system surfaces and how they relate to each other. (Lock screen, Home screen, All Apps, Quick Settings / notifications, Search, Overview)
We developed a coherent spatial model that we used to scale our core surfaces across Android devices through deep collaboration with parter teams like ChromeOS, Nest, Pixel Watch, Tablet/Foldables.

When designing these core surfaces we ensured that they would effectively take advantage of the form factor that it appeared on. So for tablets and foldables , we made sure to match the larger form with more function. This enabled users to have bolder layouts on the home screen with widgets and more customization.

I served as the UX lead for launcher experiences which involved touching all aspects of core SysUI on Android. This included aspects like Home screen customization, Power menu, Smart Dock, Home screen editing, volume slider, smart space, folders, All Apps, etc.

iF Gold Statement
'Material you', Google's new mobile operating system, allows a high level of flexibility and scalability while maintaining consistency across all product ecosystems. It successfully reflects a human mental model in its visual design language. This user-centered approach to digital design is a good example of how operating systems are becoming more responsive to users' needs and preferences.
